"They bred us to hunt them," Eira said. "And then?"

"And then we did the job." The old woman's face did not change. "It took a hundred and forty years. The last of it is in a single account written by a wolf who was there, which is in this room, and which I have never sold. There were eight thousand of them at the start of it. At the end there were pens, and the pens were emptied one at a time, and the last two entries in that account are a number and a date."
