In the trade, a legend is a life: a birth certificate, a school, a dead aunt in Coimbra, a bank account with eleven years of small transactions in it. Ines Duarte builds them. She built Tomas Reis at twenty-two, in a room with no window, over four months — a marine engineer from Setúbal with a sister he does not speak to and a knee that goes in cold weather — and she has never once met the man who has been living inside him. Dominic Laird has been Tomas Reis for six years. He has a flat in Lisbon, a job on a rig, four friends who would come to his funeral, and a woman he nearly told the truth to in 2028. On a Tuesday in March the legend is burned — nine minutes of a file that should not exist, sold to people who paid four hundred thousand euros for it — and there is exactly one person alive who knows every single seam in that identity and can get him out through it.
