Here is what she had, and it took her eleven years.
She left at seventeen with four hundred francs. She did two years of nothing at all in Lille, which she does not talk about. She got into a logistics company at nineteen as a temp and she was extremely good at it, and she was running a depot at four and twenty and running four of them at six and twenty.
She has a company now. It is not enormous. It has ninety-one people in it and it does customs brokerage and warehousing between Calais and Rotterdam, and it made about eleven million euros last year, and it is entirely hers.
And she has a lawyer on a retainer, and a copy of a file.
She got the file at three and twenty and it took her fourteen months and a great deal of money.
It is not the investigation file. Nobody gets that.
It is the civil file — the internal audit that Vasseur's own accountants did in the autumn of the year it happened, which was disclosed in a lawsuit in 2031 between Vasseur and a haulier at Béthune, and which is therefore in a court record, and which about four people on this earth have ever read.
The eleven thousand francs was found.
That is what is in it. It was found in the November of the same year, four months after Michel Roux came home, in an arrangement between Vasseur's foreman and the haulier at Béthune that had been running since 2019 and that had nothing whatsoever to do with anybody at the mill.
There is a note in the audit, in the margin, in somebody's hand.
M. Vasseur informé le 14/11.
She has had that sentence for five years.
Vasseur informed, the fourteenth of November.
He was told. In the November. Four months after her father came home, and thirteen months before her father died, and he did nothing at all.
Not a letter. Not a word in a bar. Not a single sentence to any of the ninety people who had been on that square on a Saturday morning in April.
Because saying it would have meant standing on that square and saying that he had destroyed a man in eleven weeks over a mistake in his own yard.
That is what she came back with.
And it is worth nothing.
That is the part that took her four months in a flat in Paris to accept: there is no case. There is no charge, there is no defamation claim eleven years out, there is no cause of action anywhere in French law against a man who made a truthful complaint about missing money in 2027 and then failed to be decent about it in the November.
She has run it past two lawyers.
Both of them said the same thing and one of them said it kindly.
