Chapter 35

The September Book

2 min read

The Bell ran in the Observer magazine in the second week of September over five pages, which was one more than they had promised, and the photograph of the sign was across the whole of the first spread.

They shot it in Ola's garden on a Sunday. The photographer was called Ines and she was there for four hours and took eleven hundred frames, and the one they ran is the one where the sign is leaning against a garden wall in the sun with a three-legged whippet asleep in front of it, which nobody planned and which Ines has described ever since as the easiest money she has ever made.
