She thought about it for four days.

She thought about it on the Circle line and in the bath and at half past two in the morning on the Thursday, and what she kept arriving at — furiously, against her own judgement — was that he had told her the truth about a thing that cost him something, twice, and that in eighteen years at that firm the number of men who had done that was one.
