That is the whole of it and it is the reason nobody in Vennow has ever been satisfied by the end of this story: they came down a mile and a half of ordinary road on an ordinary morning to a stone with a hand carved into it, and beyond it there was a beach and some gulls and about a hundred and eleven years of weather.
