He came to Ashcombe in the August of 1812. He was nineteen. His mother had died at Amesbury in 1806 and his father was a carrier and was no use to anybody, and a man at Devizes told a man at Ashcombe that there was a boy in Amesbury who could get a hand on a horse that nobody else could, and that was the whole of the interview.
