They left on the fourth morning: eleven riders, two carts, and an old woman who should not have come.

Maera came anyway. She stood in the yard at first light in four coats with a box under her arm and said that she was sixty-eight and had a bad chest and would slow them down and be brave about it, and that she had waited fifty years to see the inside of that house and would be carried into it dead if necessary.
