He did not eat. She had known that already from hall — eleven signings in two terms — but once she was looking she saw the shape of it: he bought coffee and held it. He would take a cup into a seminar and it would still be full when he left. In the buttery he would buy a pastry and put it in his bag, every time, and once she followed him out and watched him give it to a man sitting outside the Co-op, and he did it the way you post a letter.
