It was very quiet in there.
That was what she remembered: how quiet they both had to be. There were people in the building. There was a clerks' room two floors down with the lights still on and a cleaner somewhere on three, and the whole thing was conducted in the dark with their faces about an inch apart and neither of them making a sound, which turned out to be the entire architecture of it — because you cannot make a sound, and so everything that would have gone into a sound has to go somewhere else.
