The trial started on the fourth of December and ran for fourteen days and she was, by common consent of everybody who saw it, extraordinary.
She opened for three hours and twenty minutes. She had it entirely in her head; she had two pages of notes and used neither. She took the court through eleven claimants and four years and nine million pounds and made it a story, which is the only thing that has ever worked in front of a judge, and Mr Justice Ferris listened to the whole of it with his chin on his hand looking at a point four feet above her head, and did not ask her one single question.
